Some inspirational friends are disciplining themselves to eat for less than $2 a day.
Which really sort of puts a non-nutritious calorie-free $1.49 soda from the gas station quickie mart in perspective.
Here's what I know so far...
1. It's possible.
2. It takes some effort and a bunch of calculating.
3. Having a backyard garden with tomatoes & basil & lettuce helps.
4. Eggs are worth about 9 cents each.
5. Rice/pasta/bread carbs are a lot cheaper than fresh fruit & veggies. (unless you have the garden going.)
6. Non-nutritious sodas really lose appeal, as does candy. (unless it's free)
7. Church functions are great for scavenging leftover food.
8. $2-a-dayers start to notice all KINDS of leftover food: at churches, homes, restaurants, etc.
9. Calories count. In a different sort of way.
10. Gratitude is the appropriate response to food-provision.
Maybe you're not up for $2/day. But could you be up for skipping the soda?
Baby steps.

We've been couponing over here, and are averaging $70 a week for four people... which is $2.50 per person, per day. We've been doing a fair amount of stockpiling, as well. Maybe we could get down to $2 per person. It's a thought.
(V's sister, here, btw)
You GO girl!!!! You truly inspire.
